Sound Quality vs. SPL: A Rivalry That Shaped the Industry
As of 2025, the car audio system has advanced significantly since just a decade prior. The current system is measured by sophisticated software, tuned by a DSP platform, and engineered to a level previously exclusive to a recording studio environment. But despite all the technology, there is still one argument silently bubbling under the surface: Should it sound good or loud?
For decades, the battle between Sound Quality (SQ) and Sound Pressure Level (SPL) influenced nearly every facet of the aftermarket auto audio industry. Distinct products, distinct installation approaches and even customer expectations sprang from that division.
In many ways, the industry of today exists as a result of it. In the late 1980s and the 1990s, SPL culture thrived in parallel with a growing custom car culture itself. With the adoption of a multitude of amplifiers, vast enclosures, and several subwoofers, the only intent was to output the highest decibel reading possible. Loudness turned into a spectacle. Car audio systems moved from the listening experience into a demonstration of sheer power.
There was a cultural aspect to it as well. The car itself was changing. Today’s youth yearned to distinguish themselves, and a custom audio system was part of their unique identity. A loud system showed a presence. It exhibited engineering prowess. And, at times, it was simply fun.
Yet, SPL also led the technological charge:
From powerful, higher-output subwoofers and enhanced motor designs to greater heat management and more durable voice coils, it was the extreme operating environment created by SPL that pushed these manufacturers to innovate and stay competitive. Even many modern speaker durability advances today can be traced back to lessons learned from the SPL era. While at the same time, another side of the market evolved quietly:

- Do vocals sound natural in a car?
- Can the instruments feel like they are placed in front of the listener?
- Can a system remain clean without harshness at high volume?
The drive for high output in this niche of the market was not a priority, but the accuracy of performance was. Imaging, tonality, phase coherence, and distortion minimisation became key considerations. DSP became a reality during the 2000s, with measurement tools becoming more accessible in the 2010s, and SPL became a more scientific pursuit.

From Thomas Callaghan’s frustration with distortion in his Holden sedan in 1978, the pursuit was never to build the loudest system in the parking lot, but to retain intelligibility in the real world. Because, contrary to popular perception, sound quality and SPL are not mutually exclusive. A well-designed system needs dynamics; without them, music feels lifeless. However, uncontrolled loudness results in listener fatigue. The current challenge-and more often, the modern goal-is achieving a balance.
By 2025, consumer attitudes have changed: drivers spend more time commuting, streaming audio, and interacting with infotainment systems than competing with modified vehicles in shows. Factory cabins have become quieter, electric vehicles have eliminated engine noise, and people are more sensitive to sonic refinement than extreme volume.
As a result, the market has shifted: Listeners today care less about “how loud can it get?” and more about;
- How clean it sounds,
- How natural vocals appear,
- how seamlessly the system fits into the car.
This is also the reason DSP tuning and system integration have become important throughout the industry. Today’s priority is precision over spectacle.
Still, the concept of SPL has not disappeared, and frankly, it never should. It continues to remain a significant factor in the car audio industry and a driver of durability and high-output design. However, the focus of the market has undeniably shifted:
Today, the industry is beginning to understand what may have been a controversial idea: a high-fidelity system does not demand attention, but one that can disappear, leaving only the mu
