Motor Strength: Understanding BL Product

By 2016, as measurement systems became more precise and widely adopted, one parameter began to receive renewed attention in loudspeaker design: the BL product.

It had always existed in technical specifications, often listed alongside sensitivity and impedance. But for decades, it remained underexplored outside engineering circles. With modern tools now capable of mapping driver behaviour in motion, BL was no longer just a number; it became a defining factor in how a speaker actually performs inside a vehicle.

What Is the BL Product?

In simple terms, the BL product represents motor strength.

  • B = magnetic flux (strength of the magnetic field)
  • L = length of wire in the voice coil within that magnetic field

Multiply the two, and you get a measure of how effectively the motor converts electrical energy into mechanical motion. A higher BL value generally indicates:

  • Greater control over the cone
  • Faster response to signal changes
  • Improved accuracy, particularly in bass and midrange

But as with most things in acoustics, the story doesn’t end there.

It’s Not Just Strength: It’s Stability

By 2016, the industry had moved beyond asking how strong a motor is to asking how consistent it remains under movement. This is where modern measurement, particularly large-signal analysis, changed the conversation.

In an ideal driver, BL remains constant as the cone moves in and out.

In reality:

  • BL drops as the voice coil exits the magnetic gap
  • The curve may become asymmetrical

This variation introduces distortion. If the motor loses strength unevenly:

  • The cone no longer follows the signal accurately
  • Harmonic distortion increases
  • Bass becomes less controlled

So the real goal is not maximum BL  but linear BL over excursion.

Why This Matters in a Car

Automotive environments demand more from a driver than home audio systems.

  • Higher playback levels
  • Smaller enclosures
  • Greater reliance on mid-bass performance

All of this pushes the driver into higher excursion ranges, where BL nonlinearity becomes more pronounced. What this means in practice: A driver with a strong but unstable motor may sound impressive at low volume but lose control when pushed.

A driver with a well-balanced BL curve will:

  • Maintain composure
  • Preserve tonal accuracy
  • Deliver consistent performance across volume levels

The 2016 Perspective: Measurement Meets Design

With tools capable of plotting BL motor strength over cone position, engineers could now see exactly where performance began to degrade. This led to more refined motor designs:

  • Longer voice coils for better field interaction
  • Optimised magnetic gaps
  • Symmetrical motor structures

The focus shifted from peak performance to usable performance.

How We Approach BL at Austin Audio

At Austin Audio, motor design has never been approached as a specification exercise.

From the earliest days in Melbourne, when our founder identified distortion not as an abstract concept but as a measurable problem inside a car, the objective has remained consistent: control the behaviour of the driver under real conditions.

In practical terms, this means we do not pursue BL strength in isolation.

We design for:

  • Motor symmetry across excursion
  • Stability under thermal load
  • Predictable behaviour within the intended enclosure

For example, in our modern mid-bass drivers, the motor structure is engineered to maintain a controlled BL curve well beyond typical listening thresholds. This ensures that the driver does not simply perform well in measurement at rest, but continues to behave linearly when installed in a vehicle and driven at realistic levels.

The Takeaway

The BL product remains one of the most important parameters in loudspeaker design, but only when viewed in context. It defines:

  • How forcefully a driver moves
  • How accurately it follows the signal
  • How consistently it behaves under stress

But more importantly, it reveals whether a driver can maintain that performance when it matters most inside a car, at real listening levels. Because in the end, motor strength is not about power. It is about control. And control is where accuracy begins.
