High-Impedance Drivers: The 100-Ohm Question

For many years, car audio followed a fairly standard recipe: Most speakers were 4-ohm (some 2-ohm) and the aim was usually simply to push as much power from as little space as possible from each subsequent amplifier. By 2025, though, the conversation within the automotive world has taken a slight detour to something which most owners of modern vehicles do not even consider: impedance. More specifically, high-impedance drivers. And in certain circles of engineers, 100-ohm speaker systems.

On the surface, it seems completely backwards, as high impedance generally means lower power, and therefore lower output, a characteristic which car audio had spent the previous decades actively fighting against. So what has prompted engineers to revisit this concept? The answer lies more with how modern cars are built than with how loud the music can play.


The Car Is Becoming a Network

Modern vehicles have evolved from fairly basic electrical systems to truly rolling computer networks consisting of thousands of sensors, processors, screens and driver assistance systems. In an environment where these devices have to fight for electricity and space for optimum function (especially when it comes to hybrid/electric cars), a lower current draw for a speaker system becomes highly attractive. For many years, the amplifier powering the speakers could be seen as a largely separate entity within the car; today, they are part of an entirely managed ecosystem and issues such as current draw, wiring weight and heat generated are major concerns.

This is where high-impedance drivers offer benefits. With a higher impedance driver, a lower current is drawn from the amplifier. 

This has some benefits: less heat is generated in the amplifier and speakers, and less copper needs to be used in the wiring harnesses, which saves on vehicle weight and production cost, something which is a huge consideration across the millions of vehicles that are produced each year. This seemingly niche idea has become a fundamental aspect of modern car manufacturing. 

There is a downside, though. Of course, a high-impedance system has disadvantages; to maintain the same power output from an amplifier, you must have a larger voltage swing, and this requires a significantly different amplifier design and careful system setup to compensate for this. This is where many preconceptions regarding ‘power’ begin to become obsolete. Aftermarket traditionally valued a low-impedance system for the high wattage it was capable of easily producing, but raw power doesn’t always correlate directly to sound quality, something which here at Austin Audio we have always preferred to look beyond, the controlled driver within an intelligently designed and carefully tuned system will nearly always surpass the uncontrolled, poorly implemented high power setup and the notion of 100-ohm systems stems from exactly this reasoning: focusing on control and efficiency.

The Rise of DSP

Twenty years ago, a high-impedance system would be problematic within a vehicle; in 2025, however, the existence of DSP is what changes the argument completely. Modern digital signal processing now allows for exact control of gain and equalisation for a perfectly level frequency response with perfect phasing between drivers.

 It also allows for perfect real-time correction of system performance: what previously could not be overcome by even the best traditional analogue systems can now be corrected digitally. It is due to DSP that many modern OEM systems do not have their performance solely tied to the wattage that their amplifiers produce, instead focusing on intelligent setup and signal integration between the components.

There is also a Cultural Shift

This also ties into the way we consume sound. Previously aftermarket audio focused more on maximum SPL, big amplifiers and a very power focused design mentality, but today, and increasingly so, modern users are more concerned about clarity than absolute loudness and integration rather than modification and efficiency rather than brute force, and nowhere is this more apparent than in electric vehicles, where, in the case of premium models, owners expect a sophisticated and refined audio experience rather than an aggressive and highly modified one.

Where do we go from here?

Will 100-ohm drivers be the standard within a few years? Not necessarily, but the very discussion of them marks a significant change in approach to automotive acoustics within the manufacturing and engineering world, systems are becoming increasingly efficient, integrated and software-based, and measurements are more stringent and relevant than ever. 

To us at Austin Audio, this is not a revolution, it is an evolution, an adaptation to the new vehicle architectures of 2025, the goal however remains the same as it was back in Melbourne back in 1978; to reduce distortion, control signal flow and to maintain the original musical information as perfectly as possible, and although the technological pathway might alter, the principle never will.
