Android Automotive: Aftermarket Integration Challenges

By 2022, the car had completed a transformation that had been building for over a decade. It was no longer just a mechanical machine with electronic add-ons. It had become a connected device defined as much by software as by hardware. At the centre of this shift sits Android Automotive, an embedded operating system that integrates deeply into a vehicle’s core functions. Unlike projection-based systems, it does not simply mirror a smartphone. It runs the car itself, handling infotainment, navigation, voice control, and increasingly, vehicle settings. For the aftermarket audio industry, this represents both an evolution and a constraint.

From Interface to Infrastructure

Traditional head units were replaceable because they were isolated. Android Automotive is not. It is tied into: Climate control, Vehicle diagnostics, Driver assistance systems and Cloud-based services.

Removing or bypassing it is no longer practical. In many cases, it is not even possible without compromising essential vehicle functions. This marks a fundamental shift. The dashboard is no longer a component. It is infrastructure.

The Integration Challenge

For aftermarket audio, the question has changed. It is no longer:  “What can be replaced?”

1. Signal Access and Integrity- Android Automotive systems often output heavily processed audio signals. Equalisation, dynamic compression, and brand-specific tuning are applied at the software level before the signal reaches any amplifier. Extracting a clean signal becomes difficult:

  • Outputs may be digital, encrypted, or network-based
  • Analogue signals may already be altered

This requires advanced interfaces and DSP systems capable of analysing and correcting pre-processed audio.

2. Software-Defined Behaviour- Unlike older systems, audio characteristics are now partially controlled by software updates. A vehicle’s sound profile can change: After a firmware update, with new features or services and through user-defined profiles.

This introduces variability. A system tuned perfectly today may require recalibration tomorrow. For engineers and installers, this means designing systems that are adaptive, not static.

3. Data Networks and Dependencies- Modern vehicles rely on complex communication networks, such as CAN, Ethernet, and proprietary protocols. Audio signals are often intertwined with these systems. Intervening incorrectly can: Trigger system errors, Disable features and affect vehicle safety systems. Integration must therefore be non-invasive, respecting the architecture rather than overriding it.

4. User Expectation: Seamlessness- The modern driver expects continuity: Voice assistants must function normally, Navigation prompts must integrate with audio playback and Alerts and notifications must remain clear and prioritised. An upgraded system must behave as if it were factory-installed. Anything less is perceived as a flaw.

Our Approach: Engineering Within Constraints

At Austin Audio, our approach has always been defined by a simple principle: work with reality, not against it. The move toward software-defined vehicles aligns with a transition we began in the early 2000s, when we established our DSP division. What began as signal refinement has evolved into system-level integration.

In a 2022 vehicle running Android Automotive, we no longer attempt to replace the source. Instead, we:

  • Capture the signal at the optimal point
  • Analyse its behaviour using measurement tools
  • Apply precise DSP correction to restore balance, timing, and phase coherence

For example, in a recent integration project involving a European sedan platform, our system retained the factory Android Automotive interface while introducing a calibrated DSP layer. The result was not a visible change but an audible one: improved clarity, stable imaging, and controlled low-frequency response, all without compromising vehicle functionality.

The Takeaway

Android Automotive does not eliminate the possibility of high-performance audio. It redefines how it is achieved. The focus shifts from replacement to integration, from hardware to software, from isolation to cooperation. In this environment, precision matters more than ever.

Because in a connected car, the goal is no longer to build a separate system. It is to enhance the one that already exists quietly, accurately, and without compromise.
